Probably the best way to determine which type of binder you need is to consider what you will be using it for. Each material is different, so each binder will be best for a particular purpose.
Before trying to decide which one is better for your particular application, it’s important to first understand the difference between a vinyl and poly binder.
Vinyl binders are considered by many to be the more visually appealing option. The binder is characterized as having a piece of sturdy cardboard that’s sealed by two pieces of high-quality vinyl. From here, you can have a label or custom logo printed directly on the front.
Or, you can have a full color vinyl binder with a printed sheet permanently sealed under the clear vinyl. This is known as the entrapment method – this option is preferred for those who will want to change the cover of their binder without having to get a whole new design. Just print the new cover, have it inserted and sealed.
Vinyl binders come with other add-ons you can choose to enhance their look and functionality. Some of the more common include – horizontal inside pockets, business card holders, label holders (outside spine), CD holders and more.
Most of the time, vinyl binders come in 3-rings, but if you need to, you can get a 4-, 5- or even 6-ring binder. You can also choose a D-ring and fit even more material in your binder. You can have a vinyl binder made for any size content you have, but 8.5 x 11 is by far the most common.
Vinyl binders are ideal for offices, or light to moderate handling. The material though can show weakness is extreme temperatures – if it’s too cold, the vinyl material may crack. If it’s too hot, vinyl will sag as it softens.
Poly binders on the other hand consist of a solid sheet of poly plastic that is scored to create hinges. The thickness of the material can vary. Thinner sizes like a.023 gauge are very lightweight and flexible, while a thicker gauge like a.075 can make for a very rigid binder.
One interesting fact – poly binders, regardless of thickness, are generally lighter than a vinyl binder.
Poly binders though are made of plastic, and look like it. They may not be the best option for a high-end office environment, but are extremely durable. Thinner gauge poly binders do not stand on a bookshelf.
Despite these limitations, poly binders are extremely durable.
Not only are they stain resistant and easy to clean, you can throw your binder around. It can withstand extreme temperatures and other conditions like being dropped and tossed.
